Abstract

Potentially toxic elements are a significant pollutant to the environment and soil. With the research we conducted from April to September 2021 in the greenhouse of the UL Department of Biotechnology, we aimed to determine the effect of additives on the mobility and bioavailability of certain heavy metals and explore the possibilities of their further use for remediation of contaminated soils or safer gardening in contaminated areas. In a pot experiment, various additives such as biochar (BO), zeolite (Z), vermiculite (V), compost (KO), and paper sludge (PM) were added to highly polluted garden soil from Žerjav to determine the differences in the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in the edible parts of selected vegetables. The additives were added in two doses. It was found that the type of supplement and its proportion had very little effect on the Cd content of carrots and garlic. Garlic grown with the addition of zeolite (Z1) and vermiculite (V1) contained 0.04 mg/kg body weight less Cd than the control. We also found that Cd concentration in the plant increased with increasing PM addition. Cd concentrations in all samples tested were above the maximum allowable level according to Commission Regulation (EC) No. 2021/1323 (2021). We also investigated the effects of the additives on plant growth. We found that the additives did not affect the growth of the edible parts of carrots and garlic. |
