Abstract

Protective effectiveness of antifouling coatings for wooden boats |
Secondary abstract: |
While nowadays the market offers different types of antifouling coatings, the question of their performance in accordance with the manufacturersʼ statements or guaranties arises. As an alternative to polluting biocide based coatings, other environmentally friendly antifouling coatings have been developed, based on copper and polishing copolymers, as also on the controlled depletion systems and nano technology. To define the type of antifouling coating exhibiting better effectiveness against fouling organisms in the Mediterranean Sea, the selected naturally durable wood species were exposed to sea water in the Port of Koper, including impregnated and coated specimens of Scots pine wood (Pinus sylvestris), treated with different types of antifouling coatings. On the basis of the processed data, the most effective ones for preservation of wooden boats in our sea were selected, namely the soft and the hard type of antifouling coatings. On the other hand, the nano-based formulation did not protect wood from fouling. The untreated wood was completely degraded after less than one year of exposure, while the pine wood treated with the Silvanolin preservative in concentrations of biocide greater than cu > 0,31 % did not show any signs of biological damage and it could be also used as an antifouling. |
