Abstract

Secondary title: Inflation uncertainty in the US
Secondary abstract: Inflation is the rate of increase in prices over a given time. It has various effects on the economy, which can be both positive and negative. High inflation can be associated with inflation uncertainty, i.e. the increased uncertainty regarding future inflation. This thesis presents our analysis of the inflation rate and inflation uncertainty in the USA. The events after 2020 significantly impacted the increase in the inflation rate. The COVID–19 pandemic (with the related supply chain disruptions, mobility restrictions, and rules regarding limiting social contacts) and the Russian invasion of Ukraine (with the related increases in prices of fuel, food, and housing) are the two factors which had the strongest impact on inflation changes after 2020. Based on the 2020 – 2022 data, we analysed the inflation rate and inflation uncertainty in the USA. Our analysis of inflation uncertainty included demographic variables such as age, income, and education. It is important for policymakers to maintain a low and stable inflation rate, which contributes to an efficient economy.
