Abstract

Secondary title: ǂAn ǂexample of an escape room in chemistry class in primary school
Secondary abstract: The Escape Room is an interesting concept of a mind-detective game, that primarily serves to have fun and bring the participants together. The participants have to solve all the puzzles and find their way out of the confined space within a certain time frame. It is important that the participants co-operate with each other and use the tools available to them. A well-designed escape room can also be used as a teaching method in the classroom. In my master's thesis, I designed an escape room for a 9th grade chemistry lesson in a primary school. 21 pupils from the Gustav Šilih Primary School in Velenje took part. I wanted to find out: what strategies and methods the students use to solve the tasks; whether the students' participation helps in solving the tasks; whether the students are more motivated to learn chemistry than before participating in the escape room; whether the students perceive the escape room as a suitable tool for learning chemistry and how the students experience the escape room, as a challenge or as stress. The results show that participation helps to solve problems more quickly, and that students are more motivated and cooperative after visiting the escape room. They consider the escape room a good way to learn chemistry as they experience it as a challenge. The students liked this concept and would like to see more activities of this type.
