Abstract

Secondary title: Treatment of addiction in Slovenian prisons
Secondary abstract: The treatment of drug addiction is a lengthy and challenging process that requires a lot of discipline and motivation. Despite the fact that the prison environment is generally not a positive experience in an individual's life, it is crucial to try to help users overcome the difficulties they face. With a successful treatment of drug addiction, we can interrupt the cycle of crime and individual suffering. The thesis presents a study involving professional workers from the Correctional Facilities in Ljubljana and Celje, analysing the treatment of drug addiction in Slovenia and defining the factors of success in the treatment. It was found that drug addiction programs in Slovenia are divided into low-threshold programs, higher-threshold programs, and high-threshold programs. Participation in the programs is based on voluntariness and the establishment of abstinence. The factors influencing the success of treatments were divided into three categories: the implementation of treatments, prisoners with drug addiction problems, and maintaining abstinence. Prison workers encourage individuals to participate in programs through motivational conversations. The success also depends on the personal, situational, and family characteristics of the prisoner. The ability to maintain abstinence is influenced by the physical conditions of the prison and the personnel capabilities of the prison. Due to the complexity of the issue, a comprehensive approach is needed to address the current problems we face in helping addicts in prisons.
