Abstract

Secondary title: Association between the presence of pets and anxiety in students of the second educational period of primary school
Secondary abstract: In the master's thesis, we studied the connection between the presence of pets and the level of anxiety symptoms among students of the second educational period. Initially, we focused on the developmental characteristics of children and the presentation of anxiety as well as the therapeutic effects of animals, and then analyzed the results obtained using a questionnaire. This included a scale of attitudes towards the beneficial effects of animals on well-being and relief of anxiety, closed questions and open question, and the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED) scale. The conducted survey included 229 fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at two Podravje primary schools and was conducted in January 2024, and data processing was carried out with the SPSS statistical software as well as a qualitative analysis of the open question. The results showed that girls and pupils without pets express more anxiety symptoms than boys, but most of them, regardless of gender, age or pet ownership, have positive attitudes towards animals and feel better, more relaxed and safe when socializing with them. The lessons learned can serve as a starting point in finding strategies for eliminating anxiety in pupils, while giving insights into the usefulness of the therapeutic effect of animals in a domestic, educational or counselling environment, within which therapeutic programs with animals could be included, which can contribute to improving well-being and relieving anxiety in children.
