Abstract
Dijaki so imeli v povprečju pozitivna stališča do narave. Nekoliko slabše mnenje so imeli le dijaki prve šole, saj so bili neodločeni o zadovoljstvu.

Upper secondary school students' attitudes toward and knowledge about ferns |
Secondary abstract: |
Ferns are plants that people rarely see in nature. As a consequence, knowledge of and familiarity with ferns among people is very poor and little is known about attitudes towards them. We used a survey questionnaire which collected demographic information and consisted of three parts: knowledge about ferns, willingness to protect ferns which was measured with a 7-point Likert scale, and attitudes to ferns and nature in general which were measured with a 5-point Likert scale. The survey involved 184 third-year students from four Slovenian general high schools. The research showed that the students have sufficient knowledge about ferns. We set a minimal achievement of 40% of correctly solved answers as sufficient knowledge. The students’ knowledge of species is not sufficient as only a few students knew any species of ferns by name. There were not many differences in knowledge between male and female students. Students with better grades answered some questions better. There were no significant differences in knowledge about ferns based on demographic characteristics. Girls had a more positive attitude towards fern conservation than boys. The students who spent less time on their phones thought the protection of ferns was wiser, more urgent and challenging than the students who spent more time on their phones. On average, students had positive attitudes towards nature. Students in most schools also enjoy biology lessons. Only the students of the first school had a slightly lower opinion as they were undecided about satisfaction. Students with better grades were less stressed during biology lessons than students with lower grades. Girls were under more pressure and thought more about how they would do during class than boys. The results show us that it would make sense to include the basic knowledge of ferns in secondary school curriculums and to learn to recognize some native fern species. |
