Secondary abstract: Abstract Performance testing is a type of testing intended to determine the responsiveness, throughput, reliability, and/or scalability of a system under a given workload. Performance testing additionally tends to focus on helping to identify bottlenecks in a system, tuning a system, establishing a baseline for future testing, and determining compliance with performance goals and requirements. We can get great performance by balancing the key factors, considering them in our designs and then tracking them carefully. The work that follows provides a survey of the most important considerations for performance testing of web based applications, from how to understand and quantify our desired end user experience, how to choose key resources for study, to summarizing the results in a statistically meaningful way, and how we applied these practices while testing our application. And even though we put the focus squarely on web applications, the approach is actually much more general and can easily be applied for many different kinds of applications, not just web based.
