magistrsko delo
Abstract
Onthophagus ovatus in Anoplotrupes stercorosus sta vrsti koprofagnih hroščev. Koprofagni hrošči imajo več strategij prehranjevanja in razmnoževanja. Poznamo endokopride, parakopride in telekopride. Analizo velikosti in oblike struktur smo opravili z geometrijsko morfometrijo. Primerjali smo velikost in obliko kopalnih struktur.

Comparison of digging structures of two coprophagous beetles Onthophagus ovatus (Linnaeus, 1767) and Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Hartmann v Scriba, 1791) |

Onthophagus ovatus and Anoplotrupes stercorosus are species of coprophagous beetles. This means they feed on animal faeces. Coprophagous beetles have multiple feeding and reproductive strategies. We distinguish endocoprids, paracoprids, and telecoprids. Both investigated species belong to the paracoprids, meaning they directly dig tunnels of varying depths beneath the dung. They use these tunnels for depositing dung balls as source of food for their offspring (brooding ball). Due to their tunnelling behaviour, we decided to examine and compare their digging structures in our master's thesis. Specifically, we researched the front tibiae and heads of these two dung beetles. We conducted the analysis using geometric morphometrics. The research was conducted on a beetle collection. The study included 270 specimens (139 specimens of O. ovatus and 131 specimens of A. stercorosus). Individuals of O. ovatus were classified according to location, month, and gender. Individuals of A. stercorosus were classified by location and month. We compared the tibiae and heads based on these factors for each species separately. We found that within each species, the tibiae and heads do not differ in size, but they may differ in shape depending on the month of collection, gender, or location. Shape is likely influenced by different soil hardness, tunnelling depth, and the occurrence of various generations throughout the year. In addition to intra-specific comparisons, we also compared both species, O. ovatus and A. stercorosus. We compared the size and shape of digging structures and found that the digging structures of A. stercorosus individuals are larger than those of O. ovatus individuals. There were also significant differences in head and tibia shape between the species. |
