Abstract

Secondary title: Recycling of graphite electrode contaminated with transition metal elements
Secondary abstract: In this study, we investigated whether graphite anodes contaminated with transition metal cations can be recycled and reused. The graphite anodes were exposed to an electrolyte containing manganese ions in the form of Mn(AcAc)2, and we monitored whether these ions intercalate into the graphite structure similarly to lithium ions. The concentration of the manganese salt in the electrolyte was varied to determine its impact on the subsequent electrochemical performance of the cell. The presence of manganese ions was analysed by ICP-OES. The results indicated that transition metal ions from the electrolyte occupy surface sites on the graphite during the charging process. The contaminated graphite anode was then washed with DMC solvent to remove excess salts and solvents. ICP-OES analysis confirmed the successful removal of manganese ions after washing. Both the ICP-OES and XPS results showed that manganese was either undetectable or present in very low concentrations in the graphite structure. The washed graphite material was then tested in a fresh cell using electrochemical techniques, demonstrating its suitability for reuse.
