Abstract

Secondary title: Reforms of the Roman army from Augustus to Theodosius I.
Secondary abstract: This thesis, based on sources, scholarly literature, and historical articles, addresses the reforms of the Roman army that took place between the beginning of the Empire and the Late Antiquity. Before discussing each reform, the thesis also touches on the political and social events of the time that influenced their implementation. It presents the roles of military title holders and units, which are detailed in one of the most important late antique sources, Notitia dignitatum. The final part of the thesis also touches on the impact of barbarian peoples and the changes that occurred due to their increasingly frequent invasions and pressures on the Roman Empire.
