magistrsko delo
Abstract

Attitude towards the use of osint techniques in cyber security |
Secondary abstract: |
OSINT, or "open-source intelligence", is the combined concept of types of data, how they are collected and the technologies used to collect them. In principle, it is the collection and analysis of publicly available data. With the growing importance of the web and the transfer of information to it, OSINT opens up a sea of possibilities for data collection and analysis, both benign and malicious. Cyber security agencies are seeing an increase in cyber attacks. OSINT is a very convenient way for perpetrators to gather information about targets, as often the information is unwittingly provided or made public by the victims themselves. Despite improvements in digital literacy and the expression of the need for privacy, there is still a perceived lack of self-protective behaviour among people, or rather a lack of "cyber hygiene" to reduce their own vulnerability. Our master's thesis focuses on how certain factors such as concern about the misuse of personal information, concern about the misuse of surveillance by the state, the state's respect for an individual's privacy, procedures for ensuring privacy, perception of cyber threat, privacy assurance behaviours in cyberspace, awareness of OSINT techniques, and the need for enforcement of OSINT techniques relate to the adoption of OSINT techniques. We also examined the relationship between the adoption of OSINT techniques and their use for cybersecurity purposes. Our research model was tested with a survey (N = 231) among members of different Facebook interest groups. The results showed that the predictor variables explain 23.3 percent of the total variability in the adoption of OSINT techniques and one predictor variable (adoption of OSINT techniques) explains 50 percent of the total variability in the agreement with the use of OSINT techniques for cybersecurity purposes. Therefore, we have confirmed public acceptance of the use of OSINT for the purpose of improving cybersecurity in Slovenia. |
