Abstract

Trenutne in pretekle industrijske dejavnosti, zlasti rudarjenje in taljenje svinčeve in cinkove rude, so v Mežiški dolini pustile obsežno onesnaženje s svincem (Pb) in drugimi težkimi kovinami. V magistrskem delu smo preučevali koncentracijo in izotopsko sestavo Pb v zemlji, povrtninah in humani krvi, zbranih na različnih lokacijah v Mežiški dolini, z namenom identificiranja potencialnih virov izpostavljenosti svincu. Vzorci so bili analizirani z naprednimi tehnikami masne spektrometrije, vključno z masno spektrometrijo z induktivno sklopljeno plazmo (ICP-MS) za določitev celotne koncentracije Pb in multikolektorsko masno spektrometrijo z induktivno sklopljeno plazmo (MC-ICP-MS) za določitev izotopske sestave Pb. Rezultati so pokazali znatno onesnaženje s svincem v analiziranih vzorcih.

Secondary title: Determination of lead isotope composition in biological and environmental samples from Meža Valley
Secondary abstract: Current and past industrial activities, especially mining and smelting of lead and zinc ores, have left extensive lead (Pb) and other heavy metals contamination in the Meža Valley. This contamination poses a serious health risk to the local population, as lead has a negative impact on the affected organ systems, including the nervous, hematopoietic and uropoietic systems. Children are particularly affected by the harmful effects of lead, in which low concentrations can affect development and cause permanent consequences. In this master's thesis, we studied the concentration and isotopic composition of Pb in soil, vegetables and human blood collected from different locations in the Meža Valley, with the aim of identifying potential sources of lead exposure. The samples were analyzed using advanced mass spectrometry techniques, including inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the total Pb concentration and multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) to determine the isotopic composition of Pb. The results thus show significant lead contamination in the analyzed samples. Soil samples showed higher Pb concentrations compared to vegetable samples, which is consistent with the data from the literature. Analysis of Pb isotopic compositions in soil and vegetable samples showed that the samples cluster near the values for sediments and mining waste, indicating that mining and smelting are the main sources of lead contamination in the Meža Valley. Analysis of Pb isotopic compositions in human blood also showed the influence of mining and smelting, as most samples cluster near the values for sediments and mining waste. However, some samples show the influence of PM10 dust particles, indicating the possible influence of air pollution on lead exposure. The problem of lead contamination in the Meža Valley is complex and therefore it is not possible to determine with certainty only one source of contamination. The isotopic analysis confirms that mining and smelting are important sources of contamination, but in some samples it also shows the influence of air pollution.
