Territorial Impact Assessment as a tool to assess urban tourism growth

Abstract

The article presents and evaluates the existing approaches for assessing the impacts of urbantourism on cities. Of them, the participative Territorial Impact Assessment was applied to thecity of Ljubljana, one of Central Europe’s fastest growing urban destinations. The initialassessment of impacts in the fields of environment and spatial planning, society, economyand territorial governance was followed up with the evaluation of these impacts in the light ofurban tourism growth. Only one-third of impacts primarily attributed to urban tourism arestrongly related to economic activity, and other factors influence the remaining. The selectedapproach proved useful in revealing the broad picture of the impacts of urban tourism inselected cities and could be of potential use to other urban destinations.

Secondary abstract:	V članku so predstavljeni in ovrednoteni obstoječi pristopi za ocenjevanje učinkov mestnega turizma na mesta. Med njimi je participativna presoja učinkov na prostor uporabljena za mesto Ljubljana, eno najhitreje rastočih mestnih destinacij v Srednji Evropi. Začetni presoji učinkov na področju okolja in prostorskega načrtovanja, družbe, gospodarstva in teritorialnega upravljanja sledi ocena teh učinkov v luči rasti mestnega turizma. Le tretjina učinkov, ki jih primarno pripisujemo mestnemu turizmu, je tesno povezana s to gospodarsko dejavnostjo, na preostale pa vplivajo drugi dejavniki. Izbrani pristop se je izkazal za koristnega pri razkrivanju širše slike učinkov mestnega turizma v izbranih mestih in bi lahko bil uporaben tudi za druge mestne destinacije.
