Abstract

Secondary title: Parental experiences of early intervention for a child with special needs in Carinthia
Secondary abstract: This master's thesis explores the experience of a mother of a child with special needs from the Koroška region who is included in the early intervention process. The theoretical part presents the system of early intervention for children with special needs, with a focus on the Slovenian context. It begins with an overview of early childhood development, emphasizing motor, perceptual, cognitive, speech, and emotional development. The concept of early intervention is defined in detail, alongside its historical development. We describe the groups of children eligible for early intervention, the process of inclusion and implementation, and the team of professionals involved within early intervention centers. Key goals and principles of early intervention are presented, together with its concepts and models, particularly the social model. The thesis also examines the legal framework of early intervention in Slovenia, highlighting important documents such as the Act on Comprehensive Early Intervention of Preschool Children with Special Needs, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the Equalisation of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities Act. Special attention is given to the role of the family, cooperation between the family and preschool, and the role of professionals within an interdisciplinary team. The empirical part investigates the experience of a mother whose child with special needs is included in early intervention in the Koroška region. We explored her experience with the early intervention process, the types of support she received from professionals, her assessment of collaboration within the system, whether the child’s inclusion affected family dynamics, and what she perceives as the main strengths and weaknesses of early intervention. The results show that the mother is satisfied with the early intervention process and describes her experience as positive. She received all the necessary support from professionals, which she highlights as the greatest advantage of participating in the program. As a drawback, she points to insufficient communication between professionals and expresses a wish for better information flow. The child’s inclusion did not affect family dynamics, nor did it alter the relationship with her partner.
