magistrsko delo
Abstract
Z intervjuji, ki smo jih opravili s šestimi starši, smo dobili veliko podatkov in iskrene zgodbe staršev otrok s posebnimi potrebami.

Parents' coping with the birth of a child with special needs |
| Secondary abstract: |
This master’s thesis investigates the coping experiences of parents following the birth of a child with special needs. The primary objective of the research was to determine whether the timing of the child’s diagnosis—received either prenatally or postnatally—affects the pace at which parents progress through the stages of coping. The study sample consisted of six mothers of children with special needs. Three of the participants were informed of the diagnosis during pregnancy, while the remaining three received the diagnosis after birth. The theoretical section provides an overview of key psychological models related to coping and adaptation, with a focus on the stage-based progression parents typically undergo when processing such diagnoses. Through semi-structured interviews, the study gathered detailed personal narratives and valuable qualitative data reflecting the emotional responses of each participant. The data analysis identified distinct characteristics corresponding to each stage of coping as described in the interviews. The findings indicate that the timing of the diagnosis does not significantly influence the overall speed of parental adjustment. With the exception of the initial shock phase, which consistently occurred at the moment of diagnosis, subsequent coping stages were found to be non-linear, often overlapping and recurring in response to various life events and circumstances. The study concludes that while the order and recurrence of coping stages may vary, their overall duration appears consistent across participants. Ultimately, all mothers, regardless of the timing of diagnosis, endured significant emotional challenges and—with the support of their partners, families, and social networks—were able to accept and embrace their child. |
