Abstract

Secondary title: Development of public transport in the 19th century
Secondary abstract: The aim of this thesis is to explore the development of public transport in Europe in the 19th century. Using existing sources, I will analyse the case of Great Britain, one of the leading countries in this field, and compare it with other European countries. Public transport exploded with the introduction of the railways, which significantly improved the travelling experience and reduced journey times. The different types of railways played a key role in the development of European cities, which expanded as the rail network grew. The underground railway provided cities with a new form of mobility, which was very efficient as it was separated from road transport. Before the introduction of the railway, omnibuses and other types of carriages were also used for public transport. In general, public transport had a major impact on people's lives at the time, as private means of transport were few and limited to certain groups of the population.
