diplomsko delo
Abstract
V prihodnjih raziskavah bi bilo treba meritve opravljati skozi daljše časovno obdobje, uporabiti enotna merilna orodja in vključiti večje število preiskovancev.

Impact of aerobic exercise on mental health in adults with overweight and obesity - literature review |
| Secondary abstract: |
Introduction: Overweight and obesity are among the most common diseases associated with modern lifestyles. They increase the risk of mental disorders, while psychological distress can also contribute to weight gain. Aerobic exercise has a significant impact on weight loss and is often recommended as part of the treatment for various mental disorders. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to examine, through a literature review, the effect of aerobic exercise on mental health in adults with overweight and obesity. Methods: The literature search was conducted in the databases PubMed and CINAHL, for the period from 2020 to 2025. The literature search was conducted using the following keywords, either independently or in various combinations: exercise AND overweight OR obese OR obesity AND depression OR quality of life OR anxiety OR mental health. Results: Six randomized controlled trials that met the inclusion criteria were included in the literature review. A total of 386 participants aged 18 to 65 years were involved in these studies, including 295 women. The exercise programs in the selected studies involved various types of aerobic exercise. The authors of the reviewed studies reported statistically significant positive effects of aerobic exercise on various aspects of mental health in adults with overweight or obesity. The researchers also noted that combining aerobic exercise with a diet can be even more effective and sustainable for improving mental health compared to diet alone. Discussion and conclusion: The findings of the reviewed studies are consistent, indicating positive effects of aerobic exercise on various aspects of mental health in adults with overweight and obesity. Regardless of the type of aerobic exercise, it has led to statistically significant improvements in mental health, particularly in areas such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and quality of life. The most important factor is not the type of aerobic exercise, but rather the exercise is regular, structured, and personalized. Future studies should include measurements over a longer period of time, use standardized measurement tools, and involve larger sample sizes. |
