ǂthe ǂimpact of artificial intelligence on cybersecurity
Abstract
This master’s thesis examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on cybersecurity within the evolving cyber threat landscape. It acknowledges that AI shapes the entire security environment, focusing on its use by both attackers and defenders. Employing a mixed-methods approach—including a literature review, survey, and semi-structured interviews with experts from the public and private sectors, internet solution providers (ISP), and defence—the research highlights a clear asymmetry in capabilities, with threat actors showing greater agility in adopting AI-powered tools. It also assesses the effectiveness, risks, and limitations of AI-supported defence. Findings show that while AI enhances detection and automation, it introduces ethical, legal, and technical vulnerabilities. The thesis concludes with concrete recommendations to boost resilience against AI-enabled threats.

Magistrska naloga preučuje vpliv umetne inteligence (UI) na kibernetsko varnost v okviru razvijajoče se kibernetskega okolja groženj. Naloga priznava, da UI vpliva na celotno varnostno okolje, pri čemer se osredotoča na njeno uporabo tako s strani napadalcev kot branilcev. Z uporabo mešanega raziskovalnega pristopa — ki vključuje pregled literature, anketo in polstrukturirane intervjuje s strokovnjaki iz javnega in zasebnega sektorja, ponudnikov internetnih storitev (ISP) ter obrambnega področja — raziskava izpostavlja izrazito asimetrijo v zmogljivostih, saj akterji groženj izkazujejo večjo agilnost pri uvajanju orodij, podprtih z UI. Prav tako ocenjuje učinkovitost, tveganja in omejitve obrambe, podprte z UI. Ugotovitve kažejo, da UI sicer izboljšuje zaznavanje in avtomatizacijo, vendar prinaša tudi etične, pravne in tehnične ranljivosti. Naloga se zaključi s konkretnimi priporočili za krepitev odpornosti proti grožnjam, podprtih z UI. |
