Abstract

Spatial and temporal organization of work and living is increasingly affected by a wider use of information and communication technology. Industrial model of their separation like the urbanistic concept of zoning are becoming obsolete. Work on the new basis is not simply returning back to home but is also becoming increasingly dispersed on many locations and more fluid. Although teleworkers, who are - on the basis of new technology - in position to work at home, represent at present a relatively low proportion of the active population, their share will no doubt continue to increase in the future. While the main attention for this topic until now has been paid from the point of view of entrepreneurs, the author is making an attempt to present the findings of the research and the experience relevant for the planning of housing and local development. Instead of simplistic ideas of the futurists, we are facing more and more complex picture with different patterns of spatial organization of the home, neighbourhood, of urban and rural areas. Both, desirable and undesirable consequences, and new conflicting situations are appearing. Strengthening of the family and revitalization of the neighbourhood is accompanied with unexpected limitations. While regular, everyday commuting declined, the distance of travel - at least in the case of independent entrepreneurs - increased. Unexpected early move of the young members emptied the space within the home, which could be used again for unexpected for telework at home. |
