Abstract

Raziskovalne ploskve so bile osnovane leta 2005 v sklopu projekta "Razvoj in preverjanje alternativnih modelov nege gozdov ob upoštevanju sodobnih tehnologij pridobivanja lesa".

Secondary title: Comparison of different thinning regimes in beech pole stands
Secondary abstract: Globalisation led to a dramatic decline in economic return for timber due to low timber prices at constantly increasing labour cost. The key is to find forest management techniques leading to higher stem quality ensuring positive economic effects. The scope of the diploma thesis was to examine response of selected new forest management techniques developed abroad to local conditions. The research plots were established on Medvednica in 2005 as part of a project "Development and testing of alternative forest tending models in relation to modern timber extraction methods" - four plots were considered forthe analysis. Each plot was assigned a different type of forest growth treatment which differentiated in number of crop trees and intensity of pruning. A second series of measurements collecting twenty characteristic signs of crop trees was completed together with hemispherical photography to study light environment. Analysis of covariance could not confirm any significant difference in stem diameter as a consequence of different forest growth treatments. The differences were more significant for height increment and crown base. Some advantages of new pruning models were found; for example on a plot with low crop tree number (170 crop trees per hectare) the crops achieved larger height increments, larger crown base and also longer length of tree trunk which is the most important factor for timber quality. We must bear in mind however that presented results are preliminary due to a short research period and the fact that the research did not include any repetition.
