Abstract

Secondary abstract: Thesis with its content contributes to the already comprehensive field of media effect studies. Although focused on the specific genre of media content (criminal investigation) and on a specific segment of society (police officers and criminal investigators) its tenor is still wide as it is actually impossible to process such issues in a very narrow way. We have drawn certain cognizance from media effects on political, sociological, criminological, art and other segments of human society and applied it to criminal investigative context. We present some impacts of the media on the processes of thinking and what it means for activities of criminal investigation. We theorize about the possibility, that a form of social pressure occasionally influences the criminal investigation process. Thesis also provides a theoretical basis for the idea that a)when media content influences intensively or emotionally (e.g. de- or increases aggression), this can have a particular micro-level impact on the incidences of crime; b) when media serves as inspiration for the perpetrators (e.g. copycat), modus operandi is changed; c) if knowledge of the criminal investigative process is constituted primarily from fictional media, this affects the interaction between police officers and/or criminal investigators and victims, or witnesses. We stress, that the fictional media content that portrays criminal investigative activities is extremely popular. Its popularity has historically been unwavering. And the supposed effects (both positive and negative), of this kind of content are perpetually occurring. The latest in a series of media-induced effect is the CSI effect. But we, who follow these topics in depth, believe that despite its research and academic popularity it still lacks basic elements of definition and a consensus of what does it cause. Using a generic approach we listed all the alleged consequences. We empirically tested (and refuted) one of the alleged CSI effects, which states that those who most frequently watch fictional crime investigative shows consider themselves more educated regarding investigative procedures. We warn that our study is only a pilot. Maybe more valuable than empirical refutation of one of the assumptions are lessons learned about the problems we encountered in exploring the issue.
