Abstract

The initial occurence of pollution coincided with the development of tourism and the ensuing increase in local population and periodical visitors to the Lake and its surroundings. Technological development and constantly growing number of residents led to an overuse of water and an increased amount of waste water containing phosphorus which caused the pollution. The pollution of the Lake was at its worst during the sixties and seventies of the last century. The situation was somewhat improved through the implemented sanitation procedures. However, the Lake continues to polluted. There are a number of sources to the pollution. Bled as one of the most beautiful tourist spots of Slovenia must take extreme care when dealing with this problem as tourism is the basis of its economy. Due to the fact that the sanitation of the Lake requires substantial funds tourism i.e. the hotels, dependant on the clean and unpolluted lake, should contribute to some extent towards solving the problem. The Municipality should approach this problem thoroughly and bring about decisions which would stop the pollution and encourage that the projects which had already been decided upon are accomplished as soon as possible. As well as the fact that the tourism of the area depends on the clean and unpolluted lake there is also the demand of the European Directive. The Directive asks that by the end of 2015 the improvement is achieved to such a level that the Lake can be given a good ecological status. Should this not happen, Slovenia would be liable to pay penalty. Considering that the facts presented in the measurements, and confirmed by the specialists, show that this will be hard to achieve it is of utmost importance that immediate action be taken. Above all towards conservation of the Lake since the situation still from time to time deteriorates. |
