Abstract

Secondary title: TREATING PATIENTS AFTER MEDICAL TREATMENT OF COLON CANCER
Secondary abstract: This diploma paper discusses colon cancer and further rehabilitation of the patient after hospital discharge. While working on the diploma paper, the descriptive work method was used. In the first part, colon, its anatomy and functions, as well as the most common colon diseases are presented. Colon cancer is brought into focus, being the third most common cancer around the world and the second most common in Europe. The detection method, the screening programme SVIT and the treatment of colon cancer were also presented. Rogaška Slatina rehabilitation centre and the method of treating patients in this institution are discussed in detail. In the empirical part of the diploma paper, the case study of a patient who has had an intestinal stoma after colon cancer surgery and the method of treating the patient in the health resort are presented. The patient was treated according to the method of Virginia Henderson. Information on the patient’s illness was gathered with the help of a questionnaire, medical documentation and patient’s relatives. Determined needs for health care represented a basis for the set goals, which were evaluated at the end. According to the drawn conclusions, the most important health care problems lie in the lack of stoma patient’s knowledge about self-care, unacceptability of self-esteem, ignorance of proper nutrition after colon cancer surgery, and in the fear of prognosis. Our method of treatment removes or at least minimises problems, as well as teaches the patients self-care, which is very important for further living in the home environment.
