Secondary title: Analysis of the availability and use of water resources in the area of Rižana
Secondary abstract: The European directive 2000/60/EC was adopted by the European Parliament with the desire to improve the condition of water and to maintain it in the long term. The basic document to achieve a good status of all water bodies in the European Union, prescribed by European legislation to the member states, is the so-called river basin management plan. The Rižana river, one of the three Adriatic basin rivers, is the main source of drinking water for the Slovenian coast. Athough Rižana has torrential characteristics, characterized by occasional high flows, it sometimes undergoes significant deficit, escpecially during summer, due to the lack of rainfall and higher temperatures. Due the utilization of water for drinking water supply as well as technological and other purposes the river is significantly burdened epecially during the dry season. River basin management plan is the basic operational and strategic document, which we try to reconcile the amount of the water available to current and futer needs, in order to ensure sufficient quantities of water for today and later generations and to preserve the rich natural diversity of the aquatic and riparian environment.
