Abstract

Secondary title: CHILDREN UNDER THE SUN
Secondary abstract: The diploma thesis bearing the title "Children under the Sun" consists of both a theoretical and an empirical study. In the theoretical section, we have described the Sun star and discussed the importance of the ozone layer and the effects of the ozone holes on insolation. We have also outlined the negative effects of sunlight and positive health effects of solar radiation. We described its influence on the skin of older people and children with respect to the different skin phototypes, as well as discussing the protective function of the skin against solar radiation and the early and late effects of excessive tanning. We have also included guidelines for safe suntanning and the use of sunscreen products. In the empirical section, we have presented the educational project "Children of the Sun" which was sponsored by the company DM Drogerie Markt, d. o. o., Slovenia. The project was carried out for the first time during the years 2010-2011 with participation of 125 Slovenian kindergartens. Survey-based research was carried out in order to assess to what extent the project was useful, successful, and effective for raising the awareness of children, and consequently that of their parents, regarding preventive protection against the harmful effects of solar radiation. Data from the surveys helped us to examine and evaluate the hypotheses we had set up, and to find out that children had learned through the project about preventive measures against the harmful effects of solar radiation. The data showed that children aged from 5 to 6 years had worn protective headgear on the playground, and that the educators assessed the project as useful for the children.
