Computation of dam-break wave due to possiblr failure of planned Krško hydropower plant |

Dams have been a vital part of human civilisation. They are built to manage floods, to harness water as hydropower, to supply water to drink or for industry, or to irrigate fields. When a dam fails or is deliberated demolished, large quantities of water are suddenly released, creating major flood waves capable of causing disastrous damage. In the diploma work, the possible Krško dam - break failure is analysed. Due to ICOLD (International Commission on Large Dams) criteria, Krško dam is a large dam, so predicting hydraulic consequences of dam breach is demanded. Mathemathical models for dam-break waves can be very helpful for this kind of problems. For computations the computer program HEC – RAS, which is based on one – dimensional mathematical model of unsteady flow in rivers with flood plains, was used. In the study the dam – break legislation, different causes and conditions of failures, dam – break waves simulations, results and consequence evaluation of the Krško dam break are presented. |
