Secondary title: Preliminary investigation of the suitability of composite materials reinforced with natural fibre fabrics as reinforcement for building structures
Secondary abstract: Presented work focuses on a study of the possibility of substituting synthetic fibers as a reinforcement of polymer composites in case of static reinforcement of building structures, with environmentally friendly, natural fibers. First section introduces various types of fibers and their mechanical properties, a comparison of natural with man-made fibers and analysis of the commercial availability of appropriate natural fiber fabrics. Selection of basic materials is followed by production of 6 composite laminates, reinforced with flax and glass fabrics. In addition to natural fiber fabrics, a comparison of suitability of two special sanitation epoxy resins has also been made, so that both types of fabrics were impregnated with both matrices. After the preparation of composite laminates, a series of tensile tests for the determination of mechanical properties has been carried out. Test specimens were divided into groups according to fabric type, main load-bearing axle orientation and type of used matrix. Groups of specimens reinforced with glass fibers were also used for valuation of the results and the impact of different matrices. The investigation showed that mechanical properties of composites, reinforced with flax fabric, were lower than those achieved with glass composite. For a more detailed insight into the mechanism of failure and proper interpretation of the results, a close structure analysis of flax fiber has been made in addition to examination of specimens under the microscope. For a better understanding of composite structures and theoretical basis, a brief introduction to classical lamination theory has been made. VIII
