Secondary abstract: In the diploma work I attempt to provide an insight of TV watching habits of school children and eventual parent supervision at such. Mass media, especially television, is an omnipresent element influencing our daily lives. I also mentioned the importance of understanding the affects of TV content on school children in the period of their middle childhood as well as the role of parents or other adults in the supervision of TV programs watched. The fact that not all TV programs are suitable for children renders it important that parents or adults provide a child proper guidance, explanation and, if needed, exercise control by prohibiting the child from watching certain TV contents. The empirical part tests three basic hypotheses. The first study attempts to prove the hypothesis that the parents of younger children exercise more control than is the case with older children. The second hypothesis attempts to prove that the time spent watching TV changes from 1st graders to 5th graders. The last hypothesis tries to prove that the responses in the questionnaire of 5th graders differ significantly from the responses of their parents. The study included three classes of grade 5 children and their parents and the parents only of three classes of 1st graders. The results of the study sample show that the 1st grade children do not differ from those of the 5th graders in the degree of parental control regarding TV programs watched. The score of the second hypothesis obtained from the responses of 5th grade children showed that school children through their growth period spend more time in front of TV sets than during their younger ages. Parents' responses regarding their children's habits of TV watching were different from the responses of their children.
