Traffic safety evaluation on rural 2-lane highways using program IHSDM |

Traffic safety is now days more important than ever. It does not involve just drivers, but also road-designers and builders. The main goal of this graduation thesis is evaluation of the program IHSDM (Interactive Highway Safety Design Model). Program is a suite of software analysis tools for evaluating safety and operational effects of geometric design decisions on two-lane rural highways. Federal Highway Administration (FHA) on the Internet published it in 2004. IHSDM includes five evaluation modules (Crash Prediction, Design Consistency, Intersection Review, Policy Review, and Traffic Analysis). Program was analyzed with help of included user’s manuals and three short roads sections. I also wanted to see practical value of this program. Therefore I performed safety evaluation of road section from Ljutomer to Pavlovci. The program results were compared with results of others known methods (by Lamm and Köppel) and other collected information of analyzed road section (crash history data). The main features of program IHSDM are precision by estimating of 85th percentile, free-flow, passenger vehicle speeds, precision by estimating of traffic quality of service and quality of intersection analyses. The program has also imperfections such as use of American design policies in Policy Review Module, unreal speed profile graph and unreal traffic accidents prediction. But still program is a very useful tool for automatic traffic safety evaluation of highways. Its use can radically reduce the number of traffic accidents, a least that ones, that are caused by failures in road design. |
