Secondary title: Differences in adaptation to the water between boys and girls
Secondary abstract: Swimming is one of the basic forms of movement in the water and its knowledge is probably as important as walking on land. It represents the human acquaintance with water with its own forces, which enables the safe movement in the desired direction on the surface and below it, and above all, to hold out the head above water. Early contact with water is very important for the child to, recognize water as an environment which is relaxed, loose and safe. Swimming is a kinetic activity that forms a comprehensive and harmonious growth and development of the body. With a variety of motional activities water adapting influences the development of motor skills. Since the latent area of the motional skils in the preschool period is according to some researchers unsufisticate and difficult to discus about individual motional skills. Therefore also no differences between boys and girls singly skill can be discussed. However, other researchers argue that the motional skills of preschool children have developed sufficiently that they can be measured with adjusted tests means also for the differences in the level of development of skills. According to those researchers, also arguing that the boys are better than girls in strength, speed, precision and coordination, and the fact that, well developed motional skills enable more quickly and easily adapting to the water, we wanted to examine if there are differences between genders in adapting to the water. The aim of the thesis was to determine whether there are differences in adaptation to water between boys and girls, and how the fear of water affects adaptingt to the water. We obtained the results with using the grading scale, where we estimated the fear of water, and the degree of adaptation to water. In the sample we captured 18 boys and 12 girls who attended the elementary school course swimming in Elemental School in Savsko Naselje. Children were tested before and after the eight-month course swimming. The data were processed with the statistical package SPSS (Statistical Package for The Social Sciences). For calculation of frequencies of the indvidual responses the subprogram FREQUENCIES used for calculation of descriptive statistics the subprogram DESCRIPTIVES was used and for detection of the connections between ordinal and nominal value subprogram CROSSTABS was used. T-test was used on the numerical variables for identifying statistical differences between groups. Based on data obtained from the grading scale we come to the conclusion that between boys and girls are differences in adapting to the water and as well as dealing with fear of water. Boys achieve higher grades in their adaptability to water, girls were slightly better in reducing fear of water. The results have shown us that the differences are not statistically significant.
