Secondary title: Analysis of the FRP bridge behaviour
Secondary abstract: The study focuses on the load-carrying behavior of hybrid fiber reinforced thin-walled main bridge beams with the sandwich deck panels on top. Firsty, there is a comprehensive overview of the composite materials and their constitutions (matrix, fibers), mainly to show their mechanical advantages and disadvantages with possibilities for using them in civil engineering applications. Followins which is a short state-of-the-art review of the all-FRP bridges constructed in the past. For a better understanding of the behavior of the bridge structure I provided a brief theory explanation of the thin-walled laminates from the micromechanical level to the global analysis of the whole structure. To perform the optimization of the mentioned bridge structure under the determined boundary conditions, the FE software package SAP2000 was used to create a 3D layered shell model. Based on that analysis we designed the whole bridge structure for three different types of transverse bridge sections to sustain the defined loads to meet the requirements of the ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state of the structure. Upon the final results for these three types of bridge sections we selected the most adequate type of section based on the optimization criteria (mass, final costs). At the end we made an optimization of the height for the selected cross section. Due to a low mass to stiffness ratio a, structures made of FRP bridge have good dynamic characteristics. The serviceability limit state is a decisive factor for predicting suitability of the structure to sustain all the applied loads.
