Secondary title: Modelling of nutrient transport in the Gulf of Trieste with the PCFLOW3D model
Secondary abstract: This research paper focuses on the modelling of the transport of total phosphorus and faecal coliforms in the Gulf of Trieste using the PCFLOW3D model. The data about the water temperatures and salinity conditions, the wind and the total phosphorus concentrations in the Gulf of Trieste as well as the data about the discharges, the temperatures, the total phosphorus concentrations in the Soča and the Rižana rivers and the number of faecal coliforms in the Rižana river and on five seaside resorts in the Gulf of Koper have been collected and processed for use in the model. On the basis of the average seasonal parameters and values, the scenarios for simulations have been established. We have tried to model the hydrodynamics and the transport of total phosphorus simultaneously. Because of a relatively poor compliance of the PCFLOW3D model results with the measurements taken, we have tried to improve them by considering sedimentation using the Imboden model. The results have been analyzed and compared to the measures carried out on five measure points in the Gulf of Trieste. The improved results show a better compliance with the previous measurements. Besides modelling the transport of total phosphorus, the simulations of the transport of faecal coliforms have also been performed. Taking into consideration the effect of water circulation and the mortality rate of the faecal coliforms, we discovered through this modelling that the faecal coliforms from the Rižana River can influence the water quality of five seaside resorts in the Gulf of Koper.
