Secondary title: measurements and analysis of transpiration of deciduous forest on dragonja catchment
Secondary abstract: This work is a part of an extensive scientific-research project, which has been carried out by Vrije University from Amsterdam and University of Ljubljana since 1999. The Dragonja catchment was chosen as an experimental catchment, since it is interesting due to intensive natural reforestation in the last decades. Responses of forest to changes in environmental conditions reflect the integrated behavior of their constituent species. We investigated sap flow-scaled transpiration responses of two experimental sites to changes in air temperature (Tz), vapor pressure deficit within the canopy (VPD), income short-wave solar radiation (Rsi), soil temperature (Ttal) and volumetric water content (θ). The field investigations were carried during two growing seasons in years 2003 and 2004, on two sub-Mediterranean deciduous forest stands. The relative contribution of each species to stand transpiration was driven largely by sapwood area per unit ground area and to a much lesser extent by species-specific differences in daily water use. We found significant differences in stand transpiration (Et) among stands and years; average values for 2003 were 0.7 and 1.0 mm day-1 , and for 2004 were 2.2 and 1.9 mm day-1 at North and South respectively. The site-related decline was driven mainly by a differences of air temperature, vapor pressure deficit and soil moisture content. The drought effect in 2003 was greater on North compared to South.
