Comparison of different approaches to deep beam design |
Secondary abstract: |
In this work the design of deep reinforced concrete beam under constant line load, which is located at the upper side of the beam, is considered. A short survey of relevant literature is given. Several examples of deep beam design are presented. In each case the stress state in the deep beam is at first computed by the finite element method. The strut and tie model (STM) (standard SIST EN 1992-1-1, 2005; Chapter 6.5) is defined on the basis of location and size of principle stresses computed by linear elastic analysis. Location and quantity of reinforcement as well as stresses in concrete are then determined by the STM. The STM results (for internal static quantities and quantity of reinforcement) are compared with those obtained by considering guidelines of Leonhardt [1975], Heft (German Assosiation for Reinforced Concrete) and Eurocode standard SIST EN 1992-1-1, 2004; Annex F. It is found that the results are in general pretty close to each other, although in some cases (e.g. continous deep beam over several bays) the difference in quantity of required reinforcement may arise (up to 30%). |
