Secondary title: Discovery boxes for active spending of free time in the center for children and youth with special needs
Secondary abstract: Children and young people with minor mental health disorder who stay in the centers for children and youth with special needs, spend their free time in different ways. They have the option to take part in various extra-curricular activities depending on their interests, wishes, needs and abilities. I believe that one of such active spending of free time is also work with discovery boxes where children and young people can develop natural-historical procedures with their own experiences and obtain new skills and knowledge. The discovery box is an educational aid which in practice is usually used in science course but it can also be used by children and young people in their free time in centers for pupils with special needs as well as in their home environment because they can borrow the discovery box and then return it after use. The discovery box contains specific material with which the children and young people can work and explore, as well as cards on which instructions for work and various exercises are written down that enable the development of different process skills. Children and young people with mental health disorders who stay in centers for pupils with special needs have lower intellectual abilities than the average ones, different obstacles, disturbances, deficits and particularities are present in their development and thus, the exercises and instructions on working cards must be written in a clear way, with simple words, illustrations and emphasized key words. I have made three discovery boxes which I then offered to children and young people with minor mental health disorders who stay in Dom Antona Skale Center in Maribor so they could work with them individually. Observing children and young people I have record the course of activity. After working with discovery boxes, I also conducted a questionnaire where I tried to verify their usefulness. I found out that the work with exploration boxes was something new to them, that they were very interested in and attracted by exploring and that they would like to work in such way also in the future.
