Construction of dikes from using sand as main fill material - feasibility study |
Secondary abstract: |
HE Breţice is the fifth in a chain of six hydroelectric power plants on the lower Sava.
Approximately 13 km of dikes will have to be built along the left and the right bank of the
Sava river to create an accumulation reservoir. In my degree we examined the possibility to
use locally available sand deposits as the main fill material. The use of sand will represent the
environmentally and economically friendly solution. Because there is no experience in
building dikes from sands in Slovenia and this sand has a reputation of being difficult to build
dikes from, we examined characteristics of sand and estimated its application in dikes. We
examined all index properties of sand, the compactibility, deformability, collapse, shear
strength and permeability. The results of laboratory tests were verified by control
measurements at the experimental dike built of local sands. The analysis of the results showed
that the sand could be used as fill material, however some requirements regarding the
achieved dry density and the use of filters layers to prevent piping must be fulfilled. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
