Secondary abstract: The knowledge about seismic response of bridges was poor at the time of construction of viaduct Ravbarkomanda. That lead to underestimated earthquake forces and therefore to unsuitable construction details, such as lap splices, situated in the regions of plastic hinges, use of plain reinforcement, insufficient transverse reinforcement and, as in the case of viaduct Ravbarkomanda, transverse reinforcement constructed on the inner side of the longitudinal bars. The main aim of the study was to estimate the seismic response of the viaduct Ravbarkomanda and to propose seismic strengthening of the columns. This thesis deals with seismic analysis and strengthening of viaduct Ravbarkomanda in transverse direction. Very few data is available in the literature on the seismic behavior of columns similar to those of viaduct Ravbarkomanda. Therefore an experiment was performed at the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute in order to obtain data for proper selection of analytical modeling. Linear analysis in accordance with EC8/2 and nonlinear analysis of seismic response were performed. The analysis showed that strength of the existing columns is satisfactory, except for the column No.30. From the seismic strengthening point of view, composite materials jackets are the most suitable, but because concrete cover is planed to be replaced, the use of concrete jacket is more reasonable. There are a number of viaducts, similar to viaduct Ravbarkomanda in Europe and because of that we performed the analysis for the case of worse foundation conditions and the case of stronger earthquake. Seismic analysis and strengthening in longitudinal direction was performed by Rejec (2006).
