Public transport fixed routes quality indicators |
Secondary abstract: |
The choice of line routes has a significant effect on the quality of service (QoS) of a public transit system. It has a direct influence on travel times and it defines the size of the area covered by a public transit system. Performance measures of QoS in public transit can be divided in two main categories; measures of availability and measures of comfort and convenience. Using different indicators when describing these measures, we can evaluate the entire public transit system as well as individual segments of the system, such as transit stops and separate bus line routes. Travel time concerns user comfort and convenience and can be evaluated considering the entire system of line routes. It is one of the factors with the greatest influence on the user’s decision to use the public transit service. On the other hand, the coverage area concerns system availability and is a basic requirement, necessary for taking public transit service into consideration as an alternative means of transport. Other factors describing system availability are service capacity, operating times, service frequency and provision of information concerning service availability. Factors relating to performance measure of comfort and convenience are beside travel times also service cost, service reliability, safety, etc. In this work, performance measures for evaluation of QoS in public transit are defined and explained in detail. Moreover, the analysis of a present status of quality of public transit line routes is performed for two representative route segments of public bus transit in municipality of Ljubljana. The level of quality is evaluated through the comparison of public transit travel times relative to travel times using private automobile, and through the estimation of service coverage. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
