Secondary abstract: Mathematical modeling will probably be one of the most important management tools for managing water bodies in the future. One of the goals of this thesis paper is to make water management more understandable for general population with no knowledge in engineering. For this purpose we created Vollenweider model in Microsoft Excel program to predict the trophic state of the water body. This is a simple one-box model for predicting the total phosphorus concentration resulting from a given phosphorus load. The model was tested on »Three fish ponds« in Maribor city park. Simple model results show that all three ponds are in hipereutrophic state. The highest concentration of phosphorus is in the third pond. The simple model will never be as good a predictive tool as a model based on a more accurate data and which takes more processes into consideration. In this thesis paper we used Stella software for creating a dynamic model for phosphorus concentration in the Three ponds. With a predefined »building blocks« Stella makes models and processes that occur in the model more understandable. Processes in the model are described with differential equations and with numerous parameters. For that reason dynamic models require knowledge of an engineer. Quality input data are necessary for good dynamic model results. Due to poor quality data, we created only a concept for phosphorus model because the model could not be calibrated and the calibrated model stands as a condition for long-term water quality prediction. Based on the first run simulation of the model we can ascertain that water quality of a specific downstream pond is highly depended upon the quality of the upstream pond.
