Methane elimination methods on landfills |
Secondary abstract: |
Increase in substance and energy exploitation from waste which reduces the greenhouse gas emissions are one of the main goals of environmental protection. Slovenian legislation defines that in case captured landfill gas cannot be used for energy acquisition, incineration on the landfill itself or some other equivalent procedure must be used to prevent gas emissions into the air. The graduation thesis is based on existing municipal landfill Volče where suitable gas elimination is yet to be arranged. Based on calculations we predicted gas formation in new and old part of the landfill and proposed suitable alternatives for gas elimination during operational period and after closing of the landfill. For modelling methane emissions we used LandGem (Landfill Gas Emissions Model), version 3.2 which operates in Microsoft Excel environment and enables calculations of total gas: methane, carbon dioxide and other pollutants in gas, typical for communal landfills with mixed type of waste. Based on the calculations, we determined three various ways for gas elimination - variant A: use of biofilter for gas from active and closed surface; variant B: incineration of gas from active and closed surface using gas flare and variant C: use of biofilter for gas from closed surface and incineration of gas from active surface using gas flare. Based on economical, environmental and spatial criteria, we chose variant C as the most suitable for landfill Volče. |
