Secondary title: Motives and attitudes of residents of the Home for elderly towards practice in Senior exercise park
Secondary abstract: In this study a questionnaire was used to investigate the motives and attitudes of residents of the home for the elderly in Ljubljana Šiška towards practicing in Senior Exercise Park (SEP). Among all home residents 50 volunteers (79.3 ± 8.4 years; 80.0% women) were involved in the study, where 25 of them were exercising in SEP. Beside the basic frequency distribution analysis a one-sample t-test and a chi-square test were used. The results showed that physical activity performed by the respondents in the past was not significantly (p>0.05) related to their engagement into the SEP practice. More than a half of those who had been exercising in the SEP were used to practice there 5 or more times per week, which was also significantly (p<0.05) more frequently than the recommended 2 to 3 times per week. The majority of those who practiced in the SEP spent up to 30 minutes for each exercise session. The most frequent motivational factors for practicing in the SEP were medical (health) factors, challenge/benefit and curiosity. Among the reasons why some elderly home residents had not engaged in the SEP practice the most frequently mentioned were health problems and physical/motor difficulties, and lack of interest. The analysis of attitudes towards SEP practice showed that among all kind of home (physical) activities, the SEP practice was one of the most frequent besides walking. Based on the respondents’ opinion the main benefit of the SEP practice was the ability to perform everyday tasks much easier, feeling better and being in a better mood. Most of them liked the SEP because its training stations were placed in the external (natural) environment and because of the possibility of adapting the exercises to their own needs. It can be concluded that placement of the SEPs in homes for the elderly is reasonable and could represent an important achievement because it could significantly contribute to the increase in physical activity of its residents. In addition, it could have an indirect positive effect on their health and overall home’s atmosphere.

Abstract (ePrints): V nalogi smo s pomočjo anketnega vprašalnika ugotavljali motive in stališča stanovalcev Doma starejših občanov Šiška v Ljubljani do vadbe v Senior vadbenem parku (SVP). Večini je ta vadba všeč predvsem zaradi postavitve vadbenih postaj v zunanje okolje in možnosti prilagajanja vadbe njihovim zmožnostim in sposobnostim.
