Secondary title: Using spatial data in open channel hydraulic analysis
Secondary abstract: Floods are severe natural disasters and their magnitude and frequency increase presently. To simulate and solve problems of hydraulic engineering physical and mathematical models are being used. When dealing with problems that concern large areas, such as flood simulations, physical models are rarely used and mathematical models prevail. Common hydrodynamic models are successful only when applied to topographically simple areas with low heterogeneity. However, for more precise flood simulations high resolution models are needed. The increasing demands to enlarge the accuracy of the topography representation can be fulfilled geographic information system. This research work presents the possibility of using spatial data that was acquired with different land surveying techniques (from classical geodetic methods to up-to-date LIDAR technology) in order to take advantage of GIS in the field of hydraulic analysis. Hydraulic modelling software HEC-RAS and ESRI's ArcGIS software together with GIS extension HEC-GeoRAS were used. HEC-GeoRAS enables the creation of bathymetry of river channel and flood surfaces based on the existing digital terrain model. It also provides the representation of the results of hydraulic simulations (such as floodplain mapping) and offers some options for further spatial analysis that are needed in the field of hydraulic engineering.
