Influence of traffic sign reflection on road safety |
Secondary abstract: |
Traffic signs are primary means of communication between road and driver about roadway conditions and therefore must govern safe and comfortable travel both in daytime and at night. Modern traffic control devices are made visible at night by providing a retroreflective surface or by separate illumination. This work presents different factors affecting retroreflective sign luminance in order to determine what type of signs driver needs for optimum safe travelling. It contains descriptions what kind of regulations some European countries have to determine minimum level of retroreflection that has to be used in which cases. We made a study in which we tried to analyse if danger signs with greater retroreflection are affecting drivers habits to reduce their speed anyhow. We measured average vehicle speed at three different points with greater risk potential on the roads and streets in Ljubljana. After replacing old signs with new ones with better retroreflective performance, we repeated same speed measurements and analysed the results. |
