Communication of children with Down syndrome |

The communication skills develop slowlier among children with Down syndrome, just as their development in general does. But the communication area is not weak in whole among children with Down syndrome, while their gesticulation, imitation and the use of language for social purposes are their strong field. At reviewing the literature, I have focused my attention on development of speech production, language and communication among children with Down syndrome, on reasons causing the problems in these areas and on communication encouragement among children with Down syndrome through the sign supported communication system.
The biggest deviations are found in speech production and language. These children adopt speech production with great difficulties in comparison with children with typical development, they start to speak with great arrears and, because of pronunciation problems, their speech is hard to understand. Their first word is spoken later in time and broadening of vocabulary is slower. Different authors explain these deviations as consequences of various causes, of which the most common are: modifications of speech organs, problems with hearing and weaker cognitive capabilities, which are present among children with Down syndrome.
The results of different research show that gesticulations encourage and forward the development of speech and language. Thus, it is not surprising that the sign supported communication system, which is based on gesticulation itself, is so successful in communication, speech and language improvement among children with Down syndrome. The system itself is integrated in the child’s everyday life and is motivating for the child, which additionally stipulates its effectiveness. The sign supported communication system leads to the child’s communication abilities with the world without speech through the strong area of children with Down syndrome and, in this way, leads to a greater independence, which is an important contribution to their lives. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
Sistem s kretnjami podprta komunikacija, preko močnega področja otrok z downovim sindromom, vodi do zmožnosti sporazumevanja otroka z okolico brez govora in s tem do večje samostojnosti, kar je pomemben doprinos v njihovem življenju. |
