The role of the birth of a baby in a couple relationship |
Secondary abstract: |
The theme of this thesis is the role of a child in a relationship. Childbirth presents a huge turning point in the partners’ lives and the event affects many spheres of a relationship.
The content of the thesis presents the changes that occur in a relationship after childbirth. The theoretical part of the thesis is divided into four parts. Firstly, infatuation and love are presented. Secondly, the thesis concentrates on a relationship itself and on the factors that influence two people to enter an intimate relationship. Thirdly, family and the roles in the family are presented. Last but not least, the changes in different spheres of a relationship are presented and this is the focus of the thesis.
What follows is the empirical part in the form of qualitative research. Interviews with four couples were carried out (each partner was interviewed separately) and the analysis and the results are presented. The aim of the research was to find out what kind of changes occur in a relationship during pregnancy and after childbirth, and whether the partners experience the changes in the same way or not. A special attention is concentrated on the changes in communication, roles and time spent together during pregnancy and after childbirth.
The results show that the relationship between the interviewed couples strengthened when the child was born. There are changes in communication which can be noticed as a constructive way of conflict-solving. The fathers are included in family life as they are involved in household chores but the mothers still do most of the chores and are more involved in taking care of their child. The fathers spend more time playing with the child and they also feel responsible for financial stability of the family. After childbirth the partners spend less time together and they adjust it to the rhythm of the child. The research also shows that the partners experience some of the changes differently. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
Izvedeni so bili intervjuji s štirimi pari (z vsakim partnerjem posebej), katerih analiza in rezultati so predstavljeni v diplomskem delu.
