Overcoming test anxiety by using emotional freedom techniques (EFT) in 3. grade of primary school |

The role of the teacher in a class is not only teaching, but also developing skills which make it easier for the student to integrate in a social environment and protect himself/herself from negative effects in the vicinity. Anxiety has nowadays spread increasingly and is not treated as a taboo topic anymore. People discuss it in a frank manner. When some experience it to the extent their day-to-day operation is hindered, they are allowed to seek help.
The term anxiety covers different types of it, including test anxiety, which is present mostly in school situations.
In this thesis I tried to introduce the term test/exam anxiety because most students have experienced it, but were not given the knowledge how to confront and alleviate it.
There are numerous relax techniques that can reduce or eliminate fear before test situations. In the thesis I present only one – Emotional freedom technique, whose founder is Craig. The author suggests the source for negative emotions is the disturbance in the energetic body and that the previously mentioned technique helps to prevent negative emotions, fears and physical pain (Craig 2007, 25). Another interest of mine was whether this technique actually helps the students to diminish the fear/anxiety before test situations.
In the empirical part I researched the effects of using tapping as an Emotional freedom technique. The research encompassed 3rd grade students and their teacher in one of the suburban schools in Ljubljana, therefore 21 students and one teacher were included in the research sample. The teacher also had an appropriate qualification in the field of Emotional freedom technique.
The research results confirmed this technique helps to alleviate or in some instances even eliminate fear before examinations. Even the teacher stated the technique had a positive influence on the students. At the beginning the students had some difficulties with tapping in front of the class, however, with practice they were more relaxed and enthusiastic and confirmed tapping helps them when dealing with fear in test situations. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
