Secondary title: Seismic vulnerability study of the old city centre of Ljubljana
Secondary abstract: The thesis presents a study of seismic vulnerability of the old city center of Ljubljana with the analysis of local failure mechanisms. At the beginning are presented the history of earthquakes in Slovenia and architectural and urbanistic characteristics of of old city center of Ljubljana. Followed by a description of different methods for assessing the seismic vulnerability of masonry buildings. In this thesis is used the method FaMIVE that is suitable for determining seismic vulnerability of group of masonry buildings in urban centers. In analysis are considered the various planar and out-ofplane partial or complete failure mechanisms due to seismic actions, typical for mansonry building. In practical part with the help of software FaMIVE is made an analysis of each facade masonry structures under the castle hill in Ljubljana. Method FaMIVE, effective for the compact city center, give us the results that showing construction problem of old buildings in Ljubljana. From the results of analysis it was observed that geometric and construction characteristics of the building have the greatest impact on the final results of the analysis. It turns out that for the old city centre of Ljubljana the typical critical failure mechanisms are out of plane mechanisms. In order to prevent these mechanisms of failure, systematic anchoring of facade walls would be sufficient. Results of analysis revealed that for the seismic event of higher probability and lesser intensity (100 yrs return period) 80% of buildings would be damaged. If the systematic anchoring would be applied this loss could be halved.
