Secondary title: Simulations of dam-break waves with meshless numerical method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics
Secondary abstract: Flood waves can cause large property damage and loss of human lives. Some of the most dangerous flood waves are destructive waves caused by dam failure. Accurate numerical simulations of such events are therefore of the most importance. Simulation results affect our decision about increasing flood protection. Such simulations are usually performed using mathematical models. The way of solving the basic equations of a mathematical model depends on the numerical method used. Mesh-based Eulerian methods are usually applied, but they have some disadvantages (e.g. numerical diffusion), so new meshfree Lagrangian methods have been developed. The most popular meshfree method for such simulations is Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). In this doctoral thesis, the Tis Isat model is used, which solves the basic equations by using the SPH method. This model was upgraded with a new boundary condition and a new interface for coupling between models of different resolutions. The new model was validated against results of laboratory experiments and/or available numerical model results from literature. Our model gave good results for all dam-break simulations. We subsequently used it on a real case study simulation of a dam break at the upper storage reservoir of the pumped storage HPP Kolarjev vrh in Slovenia. Different ways of defining terrain roughness were also verified. We show that the new model is applicable to simulate dam-break flows with rapidly changing velocities and free surface. Tis Isat has also successfully been used to simulate a real-world problem. Such simulations are relatively rare. In order to achieve greater accuracy, simulations must be performed with smaller particle size. This will eventually be practicable when more powerful CPU processors are available.
