Secondary title: Gifted children with special needs
Secondary abstract: Gifted children with special needs are a heterogeneous group that needs the encouragement of their talents and special care of their deficits. The practice showed that their problems, including their talents, are often not identified and are left out without help or support. The identification and diagnosing of the special needs and talents are dominated by the stereotypes of talented and special needs learners such as problems of defining and identification and also the different educational needs this group of learners needs. In my diploma thesis we focused on the gifted children with special needs. We were interested in the characteristics, which help us to identify them as gifted children with special needs, which diagnostic procedures are needed for identification of a talent and what kind of teaching methods are appropriate for them. The main purpose of the thesis was to get the information on the frequency of identifying gifted children with special needs and to collect the data on the methods and accommodations that are necessary to work with those learners through their language learning process. One of the goals of the diploma was also to provide the social workers’ personal opinions and attitudes towards the gifted children with special needs. The empirical part includes the sample of 23 schools from Maribor and its vicinity that has had learners identified as gifted with special needs. The social workers filled in the questionnaires on their personal opinion, position and their viewpoints. The results show that there is 0,43 percent of all included learners from Maribor and its surroundings, identified as gifted children with special needs, which attend the regular primary school. Social workers that were included in the study stated that the most difficulties to identify the gifted children with special needs appear because of learners’ compensation of their deficits and because their talents are usually hidden. This study helped us to find out that social workers have a positive attitude and are familiar with the needs of gifted children with special needs. They are also acquainted with the special educational activities, which are already used in schools. In the future we should concentrate on more systematic identification of the gifted children with special needs. Social workers should have more training to get the knowledge on gifted children with special needs. When knowing the characteristics of this heterogeneous group, we can provide them the suitable help and support.

Title (ePrints): Nadarjeni učenci s posebnimi potrebami
Keywords (ePrints): nadarjenost
